Main Contractor: Balfour Beatty

Offsite System Contract Value: ~£10m

Project Description:

The East Slope Residences at the University of Sussex consists of 27 student accommodation blocks including “student townhouse” and “cluster” flats ranging from 3 to 7 storeys. Built on a steep slope adjacent to the Falmer campus, the project is one of the largest ever contracts awarded in the LGS sector to date.

Working with Fusion:

Joe Lewis played an integral part in the tender, pre-construction and design phases of the delivery process. Initially outlining the structural concept in collaboration with both Fusion and client engineers, Joe’s work enabled the substructure/transfer slab design and installation to commence. He then proceeded to manage and integrate the Fusion System and concepts into the detailed design as part of a full PAS1192 compliant BIM process, including clash detection with the client’s consultants in MEP, Structural and Architectural disciplines.

Joe represented Fusion at high level procurement and commercial meetings in order to define scope, and support the construction planning phase. This allowed Fusion to accommodate the large influx of manufacturing demand into its current workload, as efficiently as possible.

A true turnkey service was accomplished by the addition of Revit detailing for the standard townhouse and apartment design. This provided Fusion with a multi-faceted service, allowing them to deliver a large scale scheme, with minimal impact on their other client commitments.

Client Comments:

“Joe has been instrumental in our ongoing, successful delivery of Balfour Beatty’s East Slopes Residences contract. With initial client engagement spanning back some years prior to our start on site date, Joe’s pre-construction expertise, coupled with his acute attention to detail, helped us build client confidence, trouble shoot and ensure we could deliver this exemplar contract, whilst maintaining a ‘business as usual’ mantra across the rest of our operations.

“Collaboration is key for the success of offsite construction and with Joe’s knowledge of the Fusion System enabling him to respond to new briefs, challenges and opportunities, I hope Optima will continue to be part of our consultancy service in the future.”
